This production of Hamlet, directed by Lindsay Anderson, opened in May 1981. Irving Wardle described the set as follows:
Jocelyn Herbert has supplied three towering walls which give the acting area the appearance of a crossroads with dark corridors stretching away upstage; and such is the unrelieved austerity of the design that it is a moment of positive luxury when she breaks it with a monochrome projection of Fortinbras’s ‘little patch of ground’ on the back wall.
